This simple Skinny Margarita recipe is tasty and refreshing without the calories! It’s a creative take on a lighter-style Margarita, with fresh orange juice to balance off the lime’s acidic flavor, a splash of tequila, and a gentle touch of orange and lime essential oils.

We learned that skipping the Cointreau/orange liqueur and replacing it with freshly squeezed orange juice is the key to the ideal Margarita. The one that won’t leave you feeling guilty of all the calories you’ve downed at the end of the party.

This Margarita has under 200 calories per (large) glass. We call that a win!

Ingredients in Skinny Margarita Recipe

With only a few ingredients, you can prepare this guilt-free and tasty Margarita.

What you will need for the Skinny Margarita mix:

  • 75 ml Fresh orange juice
  • 50 ml Fresh lime juice.
  • 250 ml Still water
  • A Pinch of sea salt
  • 1 Whole lime peel
  • ½ Whole orange peel

How to Make a Skinny Margarita Mix

Because it’s a Margarita mix, you can enjoy it as a delicious mocktail without any alcohol. It also makes entertaining a lot easier because you can mix it up ahead of time.

  1. Place the peels in a sturdy jug or jar large enough to hold all ingredients.
  2. Using your muddler, pound and crush the peels together with the salt until they are soft and glossy from the oils extracted.
  3. Add the two juices and water to the muddled peels.
  4. Stir carefully to dissolve the salt and lift all of the oils from the peels.
  5. Taste the mixture to make sure it’s in proper proportion. The water and orange juice should help balance out the acidic lime juice, and the salt is there to bring out the flavors, not to make the drink taste salty!
  6. Sieve the mix into a sterile bottle and store it in the refrigerator.
  7. To get it nice and chilly, chill it for 90 minutes (depending on how much you created). It will stay good for at least three days.
  8. When you’re ready to make a Margarita, take the mix out of the fridge and combine it with your favorite Tequila or Mezcal over ice, then garnish. We recommend 1 part tequila to three parts mix, but you can adjust to your preference.

Tips to Make the Best Skinny Margarita

Just what you were expecting: here’s a list of tips you can follow to prepare your low-calorie Margarita like a pro!

  • Fresh is always better: quality orange and lime juices are hard to come by, which is why we recommend juicing your fruits. Plus, as you need the peel for this recipe, it’s a good idea to squeeze at least some of the juice yourself.
  • Top-quality tequila: use 100% Agave Silver/Blanco tequila to keep your drink smooth and crisp. If you like, a Reposado can work well here as well, or Mezcal if you love a smoky character.
  • Orange and lime peel: use a knife, speed peeler, or microplane to peel. When peeling, be careful not to remove too much of the white pith, as it contains bitter flavors.
  • Sea salt: use good quality sea salt, preferably medium-fine or big flakes that will crumble readily.
  • Still water: if you’re going to use bottled water, go for something light and low in minerals, or use filtered tap water.
  • Juicing Tips: juicing citrus at room temperature is way easier than it is when it’s cold. It’s thus advisable to take your limes and oranges out of the fridge an hour ahead of time.

Should I Salt My Margarita Glass?

Salt stimulates the taste buds and tongue, which improves the tasting experience. Feel free to use a fun salt combination to add an extra layer of complexity to your drink.

When salting a Margarita glass, rub a lime around the rim to moisten the lip and help the salt stay. It’s entirely up to you whether or not to salt your Margarita glass. If the salt bothers you, leave it out.

Improve this Cocktail with a Premium-Quality Tequila

One thing all great margaritas have in common is that they all begin with equally fine tequila. When making margaritas, go for Blanco/Silver if the crisp agave flavor is what you’re yearning for, and Reposado if chasing after the smoothest taste. Añejo and Extra Añejo are too refined to mix with citrus or anything else and should be appreciated on their own.

Olmeca Altos Tequila is a premium, high-quality, 100% agave tequila created by bartenders for bartenders. It’s a real game-changer when it comes to Margarita making. In 2019, it was recognized as the Best Tequila for Margaritas by bartenders worldwide. It also comes at a great price point –more reason to get a bottle!
