Come the 4th of July, America marks its Independence Day celebrations. This occasion holds profound importance and deep-rooted customs, whilst simultaneously providing an ideal moment for contemplating the essence of American identity. Independence Day stands as a federal holiday throughout the United States, honouring the Declaration of Independence, which received its signatures on 4th July 1776. This particular date was selected to mark when the Continental Congress cast their votes to embrace the Declaration, despite the official adoption not occurring until 2nd August. During 1860, President Abraham Lincoln established 4th July as a national observance. Independence Day festivities unfold throughout the nation. Numerous municipalities and townships stage processions and pyrotechnic displays for their communities. Various localities additionally organise outdoor gatherings and picnics, offering opportunities for quality time amongst family, friends, and neighbours….
National Tequila Day represents a cherished occasion for enthusiasts of this distinctive Mexican spirit worldwide. Back in 2006, UNESCO awarded World Heritage status to the agave cultural landscape.  Come 24th July, this date officially marks National Tequila Day across numerous nations globally—the United States amongst them—though Mexico itself honours its national tequila celebration on March’s third Saturday. Tequila’s origins stretch back to 16th-century Mexico, where Spanish colonists introduced European distillation techniques to the New World. Initially, this innovation produced pulque from fermented maguey plant sap. If you want to know more about the history of tequila, check out our article on the origins of tequila….
Huichol art is one of the most renowned both inside and outside of Mexico. It is created by the Huichol people, who live in the states of Jalisco and Nayarit. Meet San Andres Cohamiata Altos has partnered with Huichol communities to offer a special edition of Altos Huichol bottles via e-commerce. The aim is to make a positive impact on the quality of life for the Huichol community in San Andres Cohamiata, Jalisco. In collaboration with “Ascalapha,” an organisation dedicated to improving the lives of these vulnerable groups, we aim to help artisans achieve a daily minimum wage nine times higher than what they usually earn from their work. …

When it comes to energy at the Altos Tequila distillery, we measure everything. This approach allows us to continuously optimise and improve our sustainable energy strategies. We have introduced simple measures, such as using natural lighting in our workspaces and insulating all the piping used to transfer steam, which has significantly helped reduce energy consumption. Furthermore, in our steam generation systems, we have been upgrading the boilers to modernise the carburation methods, moving from analogue to digital systems. This provides greater precision in mixing the fuel with the air, resulting in higher efficiency and, therefore, more steam generation with less energy. Additionally, we produce fewer emissions, which offers a double benefit.
Tahona Society is a collective of spirit makers and bartenders, formed in 2009, with the aim of educating in agave spirits categories, promoting career opportunities, enhancing community networking, and encouraging life balance and health practices. After nine years of existence and seven cocktail competitions, our key challenge was to change the perception of “yet another” cocktail competition within the industry. As a result, the Tahona Society Collective Spirit Competition was launched as the first-ever competition in the industry centred around social and sustainable values. Additionally, we launched the Henry Besant Scholarship in honour of our late co-founder, who truly believed in bartender education and training. This scholarship is awarded to a bartender at the start of their career. The winning beneficiary receives a monetary grant, as well as the opportunity to join the Altos team as a junior Brand Ambassador, representing our tequila around the world….
At Altos, we compost 3,900 tonnes of organic waste per year, and 99% of all the solid waste in our distillery is recycled. In fact, the total amount of non-recycled material that we generate each month could fit inside the boot of a car. Furthermore, we believe in discovering ways to give waste a second life. We are currently collaborating with researchers to explore innovative uses for agave bagasse, including biofuels and construction materials made from organic waste.
Eco-design involves integrating sustainable practices into the design and development of products and packaging to minimise environmental impact throughout the product’s life cycle. A product’s life cycle includes its design, production, distribution, use, and disposal. Considering ways to reduce the environmental footprint at each stage is essential to protecting our planet. In 2018, Altos’ iconic bottle was redesigned to reduce its glass weight by 20%. By making the bottle slightly smaller and thinner, without affecting its tequila volume, we achieved a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions.
