How to Make a Pomegranate Margarita

Pomegranate and tequila are the stars of this cocktail, so be sure to select only the best!

The best way to enjoy a Pomegranate Margarita is on the rocks. This means slowly sipping your drink as the ice slowly melts, slightly diluting the alcohol.

Follow these easy directions and you will get it one ready!

  1. Prepare the lime sugar: Combine sugar and zest in a small bowl and rub together to help release the citrus oils.
  2. Rim the glasses: Cut a notch in a lime wedge and run it around the edge of the glass. Dip the glass into the lime sugar, gently twisting to coat. Add ice into the glasses and set aside.
  3. Give it a good shake: Pour the lime, tequila, pomegranate, triple sec and simple syrup in a shaker filled with ice. Shake well to mix and chill the drink.
  4. Serve: Strain the cocktail into the glasses and garnish with lime wedges.

Tips to Make the Best Pomegranate Margarita Cocktail

Follow these tips for the best Pomegranate Margarita recipe:

  • Use 100% pomegranate juice: While you could juice your pomegranate, it’s just too much work. Look for one that is 100% pomegranate to make your life easier (and way less messy).
  • Squeeze your limes if you can, or buy some good quality juice: The store-bought stuff won’t do for this fresh Pomegranate Margarita recipe.
  • Rim the glasses: Although not a must, a salt rim enhances and balances the cocktail’s flavor. If you enjoy sweet cocktails, a sugar rim, such as our lime sugar, is an excellent choice. You could also rim just half of the rim to have a taste of both worlds.
  • Adjust to your preference: Want your fresh Pomegranate Margarita boozier? Add more tequila. Prefer it a little sweeter? Add a little more syrup. It’s entirely up to you how you want it!
  • Make it fabulous: Top each Margarita with pomegranate seeds and a lime wedge for an extra-appealing display! If you want to go all out, replace the lime wedge with a twist of orange peel in each glass!
  • Make it frozen: Add ice and blend the ingredients.
  • Mix up for a crowd: For an 8-drink pitcher, combine 1 cup fresh lime juice, 2 cups tequila, 2 cups pomegranate juice, ¾ cup triple sec, and ¾ cup simple syrup in a pitcher. Stir to combine and then serve over ice with garnishes.
  • Prepare in advance: Combine all the Margarita ingredients in a jar, screw on the lid, and refrigerate until ready to serve.

What’s the Best Tequila for Pomegranate Margaritas?

We suggest silver tequila for this recipe Pomegranate Margarita. It’s clean, crisp and smooth, making it an excellent canvas for the other ingredients. This is not to say that you should not use gold, reposado, or even Añejo. However, silver is the best option here.

Other Versions of the Pomegranate Margarita Recipe

Love this easy Pomegranate Margarita recipe? Here are a few more versions you might try:

  • Make it sweeter: Add your favorite sweetener to make this Pomegranate Margarita on the rocks even more delectable (can be honey, agave or simple syrup).
  • Make it frozen: Add ice and blend the ingredients until smooth. Pour the frozen Pomegranate Margarita, garnish as desired, and enjoy.
  • Make it skinny: Start by cutting the simple syrup and sugar rim (it’ll still be really delicious).
  • Add some bubbles: Add a splash of club soda to the top for some fizz.
  • Make it extra fruity: Muddle your favorite fruits, such as pineapple or cucumber, to enhance the fruity flavors.

A 100% Agave Tequila for Your Pomegranate Margarita

Altos Plata tequila is the go-to for Margaritas. It’s a clear, unaged spirit that highlights the pure expression of distilled agave 100%. Expect notes of steamed agave, citrus and an aftertaste that is pleasant and long-lasting.
