Like with most Margarita recipes, the Tommy tequila Margarita is effortless and fun to make. Shake everything up, serve and indulge. Chill your glass in the freezer or fill it with ice Add tequila, agave syrup and lime juice to your cocktail shaker Fill with ice and shake for 10-15 seconds or until the outside of your shaker feels cold Run a lime wedge on the rim of your chilled glass, then dip it in the salt to coat Wipe any excess with a napkin (we don’t want any salt in our cocktail) Strain your cocktail into the prepared glass and fill it with ice Garnish with a lime wedge and enjoy.
We love Tommy’s Margarita cocktail for its simplicity and flexibility. Three simple ingredients, and the table is set! Add tequila, lime juice and agave to a shaker with ice, shake, strain and indulge!
We have Julio Bermejo to thank for this clever twist. Rather than using the calorie-rich orange liqueur (as in the traditional recipe), Tommy’s version uses agave nectar —a sweetener made from the same agave used in the tequila. The naturally sweet syrup balances the zingy freshness from the lime, leaving the tequila to be the star of the show. It also saves the drinker a few calories!
Do you want to know something interesting? The inspiration behind our Altos Margarita recipe comes from the original Tommy’s. It is, in fact, an open tribute, and it calls for three simple ingredients: Altos Plata, lemon/lime (or your citrus of choice) and honey. If you don’t like honey, you can use any sweetener of your choice. Quite the flexibility we all love!
Ingredients of the Tommy’s Margarita
Ready to make this bright, citrusy and quaffable delight? Here are Tommy’s Margarita ingredients:
- 2 ounces silver tequila
- 1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
- 1/2 ounce agave nectar
- Optional: salt for the rim*
Preparation of the Tommy’s Margarita Recipe
The preparation of this cocktail is extraordinarily easy. It is going to take you just a minute!
- Pour all the ingredients in a shaker with ice.
- Fine strain into a chilled glass.
If you wish to take the cocktail a notch higher, a salt rim really adds some magic. In addition to aesthetics, it intensifies the sweet and sour flavors in the drink, making the overall drinking experience much more pleasurable.
To make the perfect Margarita salt rim:
- Spread kosher or sea salt on a shallow plate.
- Wet the edge of the glass using a lime wedge.
- Tilt the glass in such a manner that the salt only sticks to the outside edge. We don’t want it falling in our drink!
- Shake off any excess.
Other Variations of the Classic Tommy’s Margarita Recipe
Like with the classic, there are endless ways to enjoy this cocktail. You can enjoy it spicy, fruity, frozen or wherever your imagination takes you.
Spicy Tommy’s Margarita
If you’re yet to try the spicy Tommy’s Margarita recipe, here’s what you will need:
- 2 ounces tequila
- 1 ounce fresh lime juice
- ¾ ounce agave syrup
- Hot sauce or hot peppers of your choice*
- Shake everything and serve over ice in a salt-rimmed glass.
- Garnish with a lime wedge, or a sliced jalapeño if you’re feeling extra spicy.
*Hot sauce comes in handy, especially when you don’t feel like handling hot peppers. Hot peppers can get tricky as there is no sure way to check the potency of each batch.
Still, there is nothing wrong with throwing in some spicy jalapeños in the mix. Muddle some hot peppers directly in your cocktail or your tequila and allow to rest.
Frozen Tommy’s Margarita
A frozen drink is one of the best ways to cool off on a hot afternoon. For this refreshing cocktail, you will need:
- 2 ounces tequila
- 1 ounce lime juice
- 3/4 ounce agave syrup (or 1 1/4 – 1 1/2 ounce agave syrup), to taste*
- 1 cup crushed ice
- Special equipment: Blender
- Blend all the ingredients with 1 cup crushed ice until smooth.
- Serve into a Margarita glass, garnish and enjoy your yummy creation.
*You might have noticed the use of more sweetener in this recipe than in our earlier versions. This is because cold drinks/foods need more sweetness to taste compared to standard drinks/foods. Plus, with more ice comes more dilution.

Tommy’s Margarita History
Most people automatically assume that the Tommy tequila Margarita was named after a guy called Tommy, but that’s not the case. Julio Bermejo is the man behind this clever twist. He invented the drink in the 1990s and named it after his Tommy’s Bar in San Francisco, which is today the Mecca of bartenders worldwide.
Get a bottle of our award-winning tequila, and surprise yourself with how good your cocktail will taste. Our tequila is made with 100% blue agave slow cooked in brick ovens distilled in copper. That said, you can look forward to a crisp, smooth and premium tequila full of flavor. Even top bartenders swear by Altos tequila.
