It’s National Tequila Day!
July 24 marks National Tequila Day in the United States, a day to celebrate the iconic Mexican spirit.
In 2006, UNESCO declared the agave landscape a World Heritage Site on July 24. For this reason, that day came to be considered in many countries as the national tequila day. In the United States, for example, it is a well-recognized holiday. In Mexico, on the other hand, National Tequila Day is celebrated on the third Saturday of March.
The popularity of this beverage has grown so much that in some countries it is now considered a symbol of national identity and pride. This is especially true for Mexico where tequila has become an icon for their culture and heritage.
The first commercial distillery was founded in 1795 by José Antonio de Cuervo in Jalisco, Mexico. It was not until the end of the 19th century when distillers began using copper stills instead of iron stills to make their tequilas. This made their product smoother and more palatable than other brands on the market at the time.

When you think about it, tequila is pretty extraordinary. Tequila is a distilled drink made from the agave plant in Mexico. The name “tequila” comes from the town where it was first produced: Tequila, in the state of Jalisco.
Tequila must be produced from agave tequilana weber, which is a specific type of agave plant that only grows in very specific areas of Mexico. This means that every bottle of tequila you see on store shelves comes from that region, and there’s no way around it!
Today there are several types of tequila for sale. Each has its own flavor profile and production process. There are four main types of tequila: blanco (silver), reposado (rested), añejo (aged) and extra anejo (extra aged). Each type has different flavors due to the aging process, which lasts between two months and up to three years for each type.
But, what is Tequila and how is it prepared?

Tequila is made from 100% blue agave. The traditional way to make tequila is to distill the liquid from the heart of the agave plant. This process is carried out in column stills, where the agave juice and water are separated.
Tequila is traditionally served neat, but it can also be mixed into cocktails or added to recipes for added flavor. There are many ways to enjoy tequila: you can drink it neat or on the rocks, mix it with juice or soda water to make a Margarita, create the famous Paloma (tequila with grapefruit soda), use it as the base for your signature cocktail or serve it with food at your next party.
Once distilled, tequila can be aged in oak barrels for up to 36 months. Aging changes the color from clear to golden brown and also influences its flavor—the longer it ages, the more smoky notes develop in its taste profile!
