½ cup tequila
5 cups cut watermelon
½ cup freshly squeezed lime juice plus extra wedges for garnish

Optionally: Sea salt or preferred Margarita salt
1 small jalapeño, thinly sliced
Method

This tequila watermelon drink tastes like a wonderfully boozy agua fresca and is ideal for hot summer nights. Make extra and keep it in the fridge for later! Blend the watermelon until smooth, then strain into a container to yield 100ml juice. Discard the pulp. Add the tequila, triple sec, lime juice, and fresh watermelon juice back to the blender, along with the ice. If desired, run a lime wedge around your glasses. Pour some salt onto a shallow plate and dip the edges of the glasses in the salt to make a nice rim. Pour in the cocktail and serve with any garnish you desire, such as lime wedges, slices of melon or simply as is.

Juicy, refreshing, and so delicious, watermelons are the ultimate summer blessings. A big, chilled wedge of watermelon is probably one of the best treats you can give yourself on a sunny day. You can enjoy the red summery fruit whole, juiced or even incorporate it in your favorite cocktail to make a Watermelon Margarita!

There isn’t a better way to celebrate than with this Watermelon Margarita recipe. It’s super easy to make (no special equipment required), and its vibrant color screams summer! All you need is quality tequila, lime juice and watermelon.

Enjoy this refreshing Watermelon Margarita on its own, or pair it with tortilla chips, guac and your favorite salsa to elevate the drinking experience to a whole new level.

How to Make a Watermelon Margarita Mix

Whether you want to add fruits or herbs to make your homemade Watermelon Margarita spicier, this recipe leaves plenty of room for adjustment.

  1. If using the jalapeño slices: combine the tequila and a few jalapeño slices (the longer you infuse, the more intense your drink will be).
  2. Combine ingredients in a blender: add the watermelon, lemon juice and ice into a blender and blend until smooth.
  3. Serve: Pour the watermelon juice into the glasses and stir two tablespoons of tequila into each glass. Garnish with lime slices or watermelon and enjoy!

There are two ways to enjoy a Watermelon Margarita –on the rocks or frozen. Whichever way you prefer, both are delicious!

  • On the rocks: Repeat the steps above, except leave out the ice and add fresh watermelon. Then serve over ice and garnish.
  • Frozen: Put the watermelon in the freezer until it’s completely frozen, preferably the night before. Next, add the ingredients to a high-speed blender and blend until smooth.

Prepare an Easy Watermelon Margarita Salt Rimming

If you like your Margarita with a salt rim, below is an easy method to prepare your glass:

  1. Using a lime wedge, rub the edge of an empty glass
  2. Pour some coarse sea salt or kosher salt into a small plate
  3. Dip the glass upside down and press down, moving slowly to ensure all sides are covered.

Pro tip: Combine salt, sugar, chili flakes and lime zest to make a spicy and eye-catching rim. Try dipping the watermelon garnishes in the blend for a tasty bite.

3 Tips to Make a Fresh Watermelon Margarita

Here are three simple tips that will make the difference when making this recipe:

  1. Elevate your tequila watermelon drink with a salt rim. As with many margaritas, this Watermelon Margarita mix is excellent with a salted rim. Follow the above steps to take your drink to the next level. Some people prefer rolling the glass on the side rather than dipping it straight into the salt. This technique prevents the salt from dropping into the glass and altering the taste.
  2. Spice to your liking. Give the Watermelon Margarita a spicy twist by adding a few jalapeño slices to the tequila. You can leave the pieces for a whole day if you have a pretty high spice tolerance. Otherwise, 15-30 minutes should be enough if you prefer your cocktail mild. If you happen to over-spice your tequila, either dilute with plain tequila or remove the white membrane and seeds.
  3. Taste and adjust. The best thing about homemade cocktail recipes is that you can always tweak them to find a balance of flavors you love. If you prefer a sweeter drink, add an extra splash of watermelon juice or Cointreau. For more tartness, add more lime juice.

Our Altos Version of a Watermelon Tequila Drink

Craving something a bit spicier? The Spicy Watermelon mix from Altos packs a punch. The recipe pairs Olmeca Altos Plata, Ancho Reyes, basil syrup, watermelon juice, and fresh lime juice. The basil syrup adds a herbal twist, while the slight spiciness of the Ancho Reyes creates a well-balanced flavor.

Anytime you’re making a Margarita, be sure to use a good quality tequila, preferably one that’s 100% agave. Altos Plata is an unaged 100% agave tequila produced from the Altos highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. Thanks to its sweet herbal taste and smooth finish, our tequila makes for an excellent spirit for this fresh Watermelon Margarita.
